Going beyond skin deep
Besides his pretty face and raven hair, you can bet there's more to him than that. Yeah, it's the "in-depth" section. Basically put, he's a tortured soul. He couldn't live life normally after Uchiha massacre. Now, he lives off vengeance. One can't help but pity Sasuke, even if it's just a little. Someone so skilled and talented has only survived for five years on a single reason. That, ironically, is to get revenge on his own blood. The one person that he envied, admired, and loved. Now, it's pure hatred, and that is what's tragic about him. |
If Sasuke's physical attributes matched exactly his personality, he'd be an ugly person. And let's face it; he's one heck of a potential villain. While his strengths are in looks and talent, he lacks in compassion and empathy. In fact, it seems almost as if he only has one consistent emotion: vengeance. It's as if he hardly feels others at all.
However, it doesn't mean that he's incapable of getting close to others. He does, in fact, with Naruto, Sakura, and maybe even Kakashi-sensei. Those people gave him an opening; a new hope to turn from his never-ending struggle. And when I mean "struggle", it's not necessarily revenge. Even if he does get revenge, he just |
gets rid of one problem. His life will never be the way it used to be before the massacre. Err.. what I'm trying to emphasize is he will never reach true satisfaction even with his brother dead and his clan "revived" (whatever that means O.o;;). During his battle with Gaara, he tells Naruto "I don't want anyone close to die in front of me" (err.. or something along those lines). Point is he knows the pain of being left behind, and he sure as hell wouldn't want to ever experience that again.
Kishimoto's describes his outlook on Sasuke as "one who is as lonely as Naruto". Sasuke lost everything dear to him; he lost the only comfort he had. In order to get revenge on |
Itachi, he must not have anything else that he could lose. So, it only makes sense that Sasuke does everything in his power to be lonely. He says "the pain of loneliness makes a person stronger". Not only that, but how could he be with anyone who wouldn't understand him?
His weakness became his thirst for power from the point of receiving the cursed seal. Of course, we all know the endings of people like that. However, Sasuke's a bit different than that. Even if he knows the consequences of achieving great power,it wouldn't matter much to him. He knows there's another choice for him, but he chose revenge over happiness, even if it |
would hurt him in the long run. Worst part of all, his solitude leads to him making all the decisions himself. However, you have to consider that his worst flaw is neither his vengeance or power, but his solitude. His revenge isn‘t irrational. His hunger for power isn't entirely his fault; plus, it's caused by wanting revenge. It's his solitude that ultimately causes both of these. I mean, think about it. If he wasn't so stubborn to realize that with others, he could achieve getting revenge on Itachi. Not only that, but with teamwork, he would have much more power than he could ever have. Teamwork, unsurprisingly, is the most important theme of Naruto. In other words, there's strength in numbers. Sasuke has the most trouble understanding this concept. |
Understanding Sasuke as a whole is probably a more difficult than it seems. True, he has a lot of angst, but he occasionally shows other emotions. And of course, he smiles, but rarely it's because he's truly happy. Come to think of it, I can't think of any specific incidents right now xO Maybe except for that one "worst episode ever" thing -- umm, if that counts, haha. |
